The short terms used on these pages, explained only as far as these games need.

Io game
A multiplayer game played in the browser against other people, usually with simple controls. Snake is MLG Edition is the example here.
Online play
Playing with or against other people over the internet. Poki lists it for Soccer Skills 2 (with a friend) and Snake is MLG Edition.
Rail ride
A game where you stay on a fixed track and only control speed. Rail in the Air works this way.
Upgrade loop
Earn something in play, then spend it to get better tools or parts. Sea Catcher uses raft building; Grand Prix Hero uses coins.
Aim and release
Press and hold to aim, then let go to act. Soccer Skills 2 uses this for passes, shots and set pieces.
Lean steering
Steering with a tilt left or right instead of a full turn. Grand Prix Hero uses A and D or the arrow keys.
Wave fighter
A fighting game where enemies arrive in groups and get faster. Iron Snout is the example.
Boost
A short burst of extra speed. Snake is MLG Edition uses Space or a click; Grand Prix Hero has boosts you time yourself.
